(Proverbs 13:3) Sports are a unique arena. You know this, God. For whatever reason—on the field, on the court, on the ice, on the track—something comes out of us, especially those who You’ve given the gift of competition. Whether it’s a will to win, a pride in our abilities, or some combination of the two, sports make many of us start talking—and often without thinking. Trash talking takes an opportunity for healthy competition and twists it in order to tear down and discourage those on the other team. Although this might be effective in distracting opponents, we know this isn’t from You, Father. You tell us to encourage, to build up with our words—not to tear down. God, I ask You to give ___ a supernatural discipline and control over their words, especially in their sport. Empower ___ to fight off attacks from the Enemy in this area, even (and especially) when the Enemy offers them a potential material reward. Help ___ to see their opponents through Your eyes—as Your children, in need of love, respect and encouragement. Through Your Spirit, Lord, equip ___ to find the balance between hard work and respect for their competition. May they set an example for those around them in their sport and beyond. Amen.
